Reading Can Improve Your Mental Health

Anna Ohlden wrote a blog on March 25th 2009 which confirmed that top medical experts are saying reading books and novel is good for health. We all know that reading books can help build your general knowledge and English and now it improves your health. Many Doctors these days believe that reading a good book can actually improve your health, which is great news; because I read daily and so do you. Everyone reads at certain point as currently you are reading this blog.

When I arrive in the UK 15 years ago, I was not fluent in English and used to struggle to hold a conversation. I started reading lots and lots of books. I didn’t have a selected choice of books, I just read anything from books to newspapers, which was in English. I used to go to my local second hand book sellers in a weekly basis as they has good quality second hand books in cheap prices.

There were also school books to help my general knowledge and to improve my education but in my spare time I used to read more books such as children’s books & fiction books. Moving to UK was a whole cultural change for me, I was very young and have to adapt to the new change as soon as possible. Unfortunately I became really ill and depressed within few weeks of arriving in the UK, as I wasn’t able to adapt to the new change. Then I started focusing on reading books, I was recommended this by my family and also my doctor.

My life after school in my recent months in UK was mostly spent inside my house reading books, whereas many children my age would have been playing outside with their friends, but I am pretty happy I did that, because I gained a lot of confidence from reading, which helped improve my English and also gave me a creative mind. I started writing and doing other creative things. After few months I felt comfortable in the environment I was in and started going out for photography as I had a new hobby – think I read a lot of photography books. I do believe reading books helps improve mental health as it improved mine.
